Words from the "Interim"...

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the top, where would you rank yourself in the area of your participation and support of Westwood Baptist Church?

Westwood has so many wonderful opportunities of Worship; Bible Study; Sunday School; Children, Youth, Singles, Adult and Senior Adult ministries; Music for all ages; lots of Wednesday night activities for all ages; missions and outreach locally and beyond Cary. This list goes on and on. Are you and members of your family participating in one or more of these opportunities each week?

The membership of Westwood gave approval to a funding program (budget) for 2008 in order to have the resources to support all these ministries throughout the year. Have you been faithful in the area of stewardship making your contribution to this budget? Have you made up your contributions when you have been away on Sundays this past summer? September is a great month to “catch up” your tithes and offerings at Westwood.

In my 30+ years of church ministry, I have experienced September as the “start-up” of a new church year with many programs beginning due to summer being over. I want to encourage you to “start-up” at Westwood this month if you have been “out” for some time. Take time to read carefully all the opportunities the church makes available to you and your family and make the commitment to return to Westwood.

Begin, by being present on the first Sunday in September!

Blessings,
Dennis N. Bazemore

Who Needs The Vial of Life?

Everyone! The Vial of Life (Lifesaving Information For Emergencies) packet provides easily accessed medical information that could be critical to emergency responders.
Seniors: Having your medical providers, medications, health condition along with your personal information in one place that is quick to locate could allow immediate intervention if you are alone or unable to communicate with EMS personnel.
Parents: When you have a babysitter or care-giver with your kids, having this medical information readily available in an emergency situation would ensure that care would be immediate and appropriate.
Grandparents: When your grandchildren come to visit, you would have all their medical information to quickly pass on to medical personnel in the event of an emergency hospital visit or if EMS were to be summoned.
Singles: Everyone who lives alone should have this medical history readily available to ensure that anyone who responds to your emergency will be able to respond quickly and appropriately.

Westwood Back Porch String Band

Well, the Back Porch Band has had a busy summer. It all started back on May 3rd when the band traveled up to Goochland County, Virginia and took part in the Goochland Spring Festival. The group enjoyed a wonderful, sunny day in Virginia’s horse country.

Then, it was over to Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh in early June for a special Wednesday night service. The band played outside during the hot dog and hamburger cookout and then moved inside for a special “live radio show” drama/skit put on by the Hayes Barton folks. The Back Porch Band performed as the ‘house band’ for the show. It was an especially good show and although we were tired and hot, we really enjoyed it.

We played the Prelude for the Westwood church service on June 8th and then journeyed over to the Durham Ronald MacDonald house on June 10th. We met there with the Cary-Page Rotary Club who were hosting an annual cookout for the residents of the house. We played and had a good time (of course) and even got a bit of notoriety – at the end, after we thought we were finished, one of the residents requested ‘Amazing Grace’ and caught us on his cell phone/camera and posted the video on the YouTube website. Go to the YouTube website and search “Ronald Macdonald Durham”. We are world wide now!

On Saturday, July 26th and again on August 2nd, the band played at the Cary Farmer’s Market in downtown Cary. The weather wasn’t too hot, the music was enjoyed and some of us got some fresh veggies and berries for free, plus a little cash got donated (for the organ fund).

Our next road trip is Sunday evening, August 24th, when we go to Temple Baptist in Raleigh and play for a pig pickin’ cookout. We will definitely enjoy ourselves there!

Looking ahead, we have potential play dates at Colonial in September and First Methodist in Wilson in October. Plus, we play at the Phoenix Retirement Home (across the street from the church) once a month. If you, your company, or your organization would like to have us play at your function, just call Ed Pratt or Marc Gilfillan and we’ll see what we can do.

Crown Financial Ministries Is Coming to Westwood

Crown Financial Ministries, founded in 1976, is an interdenominational ministry dedicated to equipping people around the world to learn, apply, and teach biblical principles. Crown has taught or equipped more than 50 million people in over 40 nations with the life-transforming message of faithfully living by God’s financial principles in every area of their lives.

The financial challenges people face today are staggering. How many are affected by growing debt, little or no savings, inadequate income, and no plans for their financial future? Surveys reveal that over half of all divorces are the result of financial tension in the home. Others are financially sound but do not realize that their attitudes toward money have robbed them of spiritual vitality (Matthew 6:24). They are not spending their resources in eternally significant ways. Giving a percentage of income has declined almost every year for the last 30 years!

On September 10th, a small group Crown study will begin on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 8:30 PM and continue for 10 weeks. The enrollment will be limited to 8 people plus the leaders. Norman Beckham and Paul Folmsbee will serve as facilitators. The cost for materials is $25 for an individual or $45 per couple. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board.

Dealing with Digital Photographs Class

Digital photography is wonderful, but do you often take pictures and end up leaving them on the memory card or stored somewhere on your computer? You are invited to a 2-session seminar on Thursdays, September 11th and 18th from 10:00 – 11:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall.
These two 90-minute sessions include:

Thinking Ahead: Tips for Taking the Photos You Want
Getting Photos Off the Camera’s Memory Card
Using Photo Storage on Internet Sites
Editing & Getting Prints of Your Photos
Using Your Photos with the Computer: Screensaver, Scrapbooking, Greeting Cards, Printing on Fabric, Blogs

Donna Beckham, the instructor, works as a cruise enrichment speaker for the Norwegian Cruise Line. You will receive handouts of much of the PowerPoint slide presentation to take home with you. The class is FREE, so please invite neighbors and unchurched friends. The class is limited to 25. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board.

Red Springs, NC Mission Trip

A group from our church will be going to Red Springs, NC on Saturday, September 13. Many of Westwood members have been to Grifton, NC. Red Springs is a new “Mission Work Camp” similar to Grifton that has been established by NC Baptist Men. Much of the equipment that was in Gulfport, Mississippi, for Hurricane Katrina disaster relief work has been moved to Red Springs. Eddie Williams, who was in charge of the Gulfport operation, is heading up the work in Red Springs. Red Springs is located in Robeson County southwest of Fayetteville. Men, women and youth can all participate. No special skills are needed - just willing workers. We will meet at the church parking lot and depart for Red Springs at 6:00am. We will work until 4:00pm and return to Cary by 6:00pm Saturday evening. Sign up sheets are posted in Hallway A & B. Please contact Jim Canterberry for details

North Carolina Missions Initiative

Poverty in Our Own Backyard

In Partnership with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina
A Family-Friendly Missions Weekend
October 24-26, 2008
Vance, Halifax, and Warren Counties

Again this year, we plan to participate in the North Carolina Missions Initiative: Poverty in Our Own Backyard during the weekend of October 24-26. Opportunities will include light construction, painting, demolition, yard work, Kid’s Carnival*, ministry to women, cleaning up trash and debris, and feeding the hungry. The weekend is planned for Friday evening through early Sunday afternoon. Since we will be working in the Roanoke Rapids area (only about 1.5 hours away from Westwood), some folks will find it more convenient to travel to the site on Saturday morning and return home after our work on Saturday evening. However, we hope that many will consider spending the entire weekend, becoming immersed in this mission experience. On Friday evening, we’ll have time to spend in fellowship and devotional time with our Westwood team. On Saturday evening, we’ll attend a dinner celebrating the work done during the day where we’ll here reports from all the job sites. On Sunday, we’ll worship at one of the host churches and enjoy a lunch with them prior to returning to Westwood. See the Sample Itinerary below for more details.

The cost for the weekend is $25 per person not to exceed $65 per family. Last year, we stayed at the Hampton Inn in Roanoke Rapids The cost was $71 plus tax per night and included breakfast.

This weekend is a wonderful opportunity for individuals, families, Sunday School classes, missions circles, and other ministry groups who want to “get their hands dirty” sharing Christ’s love, presence, and compassion in areas of intense poverty in our state. Please indicate your intent to participate in this rich missions experience by placing your name on the sign up sheets in either Hall A, B, or in the Children’s area. Please sign up soon as we must register our group and secure hotel reservations by early September. If you have questions, see Mike, Michelle, or Caroline or call the church office.

*NOTE: Families with children in the 5th grade or younger should participate in the Kid’s Carnival.
