Words from the "Interim"...

According to the most recently released figures from the U. S. Census Bureau, “Cary is the nation’s fifth-fastest growing large city.” When I read this article about Cary’s growth, I could not help but think of the opportunities for Westwood Baptist Church to grow. This church has been planted in a fertile mission field! Cary is a place of new homes, new subdivisions and most importantly, new families.

I do not think WBC should take the growth of Cary lightly nor should the church just wait for newcomers to “show up.” There must be a church-wide strategic plan for mission outreach throughout the town of Cary. WBC has the wonderful opportunity through its ministries to all ages to reach out to these new residents. You have excellent facilities, an outstanding church staff, committed lay leadership and great programs which together must be used in every way possible to share the good news of Jesus Christ and WBC with the growing population of Cary.

My thanks to all who provided leadership and all who attended Vacation Bible School. There is not another time in the church year where more concentrated Bible Study is presented along with special activities than VBS.

I look forward to seeing you throughout August as we gather for Worship, Bible Study, Prayer Meeting, Mission Education, Outreach and other ministries. I hope to see “new faces” during these times also! It is a real joy to serve with you during these great days.

Blessings,
Dennis N. Bazemore

Grifton, NC Mission Trip
Saturday, August 23

A group from our church will be going to Grifton, NC on Saturday, August 23. We will be working on a project called “Hope Builders”. This pilot project is being done through an agreement with NC Baptists and state government to eliminate some of the sub-standard housing in our state.
Men, women and youth can all participate. No special skills are needed - just willing workers. We will meet at the church parking lot and depart for Grifton at 6:00am. We will work until 4:00pm and return to Cary by 6:00pm Saturday evening. Sign up sheets are posted in Hallway A & B. Please contact Jim Canterberry for details.

Recipes Wanted! Westwood Needs Your Help In Creating
Our “First Edition” Cookbook!

Westwood Single Adults are sponsoring a cookbook project for our Church. We will be collecting your recipes through August 15. Please click HERE for a form. Boxes will also be located there to collect your recipes.

Don't forget to include those favorite recipes of your parents, family and friends; and fill free to put their names on the form in honor or memory of that person.

We will be taking final orders for the cookbooks thru August 15. They should be printed and back in time for you to give as Christmas gifts to your family, friends and neighbors.

The money raised from this project will be given to Westwood's DROP Fund.

Matthew 5:15 – Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

Let your recipes shine for all to see, and taste.

Crown Financial Ministries Is Coming to Westwood

Crown Financial Ministries, founded in 1976, is an interdenominational ministry dedicated to equipping people around the world to learn, apply, and teach biblical principles. Crown has taught or equipped more than 50 million people in over 40 nations with the life-transforming message of faithfully living by God’s financial principles in every area of their lives.

The financial challenges people face today are staggering. How many are affected by growing debt, little or no savings, inadequate income, and no plans for their financial future? Surveys reveal that over half of all divorces are the result of financial tension in the home. Others are financially sound but do not realize that their attitudes toward money have robbed them of spiritual vitality (Matthew 6:24). They are not spending their resources in eternally significant ways. Giving a percentage of income has declined almost every year for the last 30 years!

On September 10th, a small group Crown study will begin on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 8:30 PM and continue for 10 weeks. The enrollment will be limited to 8 people plus the leaders. Norman Beckham and Paul Folmsbee will serve as facilitators. The cost for materials is $25 for an individual or $45 per couple. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board.

Senior Adults

The Senior Adults will attend the production of “A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline,” Thursday, Aug. 28 at the Temple Theatre in Sanford. Meet at the church at 12:30pm (eat before coming) to ride in vans to the 2:00pm matinee. Afterwards we will stop for a seafood dinner. The cost of $35 includes tickets, dinner and van rentals. There is a sign-up sheet on the Senior Adult bulletin board. Please sign-up by Wednesday, August 13.

Dealing with Digital Photographs Class

Digital photography is wonderful, but do you often take pictures and end up leaving them on the memory card or stored somewhere on your computer? You are invited to a 2-session seminar on Thursdays, September 11th and 18th from 10:00 – 11:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall.
These two 90-minute sessions include:

Thinking Ahead: Tips for Taking the Photos You Want
Getting Photos Off the Camera’s Memory Card
Using Photo Storage on Internet Sites
Editing & Getting Prints of Your Photos
Using Your Photos with the Computer: Screensaver, Scrapbooking, Greeting Cards, Printing on Fabric, Blogs

Donna Beckham, the instructor, works as a cruise enrichment speaker for the Norwegian Cruise Line. You will receive handouts of much of the PowerPoint slide presentation to take home with you. The class is FREE, so please invite neighbors and unchurched friends. The class is limited to 25. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board.

Monday Morning Bible Study

“He Still Moves Stones,” by Max Lucado will be the focus of study for the Monday Morning Bible Study beginning on September 8, from 10:00-11:00am. Gloria Allard will facilitate the study of hurting people who experienced miracles in their lives after coming to Jesus. This study will last through February with 2 weeks off at Christmas. A sign-up sheet is in Hall A for those who would like to participate.

Wednesday Night Women's Bible Study

Starting in September, we will be offering the Beth Moore bible study “The Patriarchs: Encountering the God of Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob”. This video based study is full of twists and turns, ruin and redemption, revelation and mystery. The study of Genesis 12-50 keeps participants captivated by the God who stars in it! This is a 22 week study which runs from September through March. We will meet from 6:30-7:30pm in Room 206 starting Wednesday, September 10th. If you would like to participate in this study, please sign up on the bulletin board in Hall A. If you need further information contact Pam White.

North Carolina Missions Initiative

Poverty in Our Own Backyard

In Partnership with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina
A Family-Friendly Missions Weekend
October 24-26, 2008
Vance, Halifax, and Warren Counties

Again this year, we plan to participate in the North Carolina Missions Initiative: Poverty in Our Own Backyard during the weekend of October 24-26. Opportunities will include light construction, painting, demolition, yard work, Kid’s Carnival*, ministry to women, cleaning up trash and debris, and feeding the hungry. The weekend is planned for Friday evening through early Sunday afternoon. Since we will be working in the Roanoke Rapids area (only about 1.5 hours away from Westwood), some folks will find it more convenient to travel to the site on Saturday morning and return home after our work on Saturday evening. However, we hope that many will consider spending the entire weekend, becoming immersed in this mission experience. On Friday evening, we’ll have time to spend in fellowship and devotional time with our Westwood team. On Saturday evening, we’ll attend a dinner celebrating the work done during the day where we’ll here reports from all the job sites. On Sunday, we’ll worship at one of the host churches and enjoy a lunch with them prior to returning to Westwood. See the Sample Itinerary below for more details.

The cost for the weekend is $25 per person not to exceed $65 per family. Last year, we stayed at the Hampton Inn in Roanoke Rapids The cost was $71 plus tax per night and included breakfast.

This weekend is a wonderful opportunity for individuals, families, Sunday School classes, missions circles, and other ministry groups who want to “get their hands dirty” sharing Christ’s love, presence, and compassion in areas of intense poverty in our state. Please indicate your intent to participate in this rich missions experience by placing your name on the sign up sheets in either Hall A, B, or in the Children’s area. Please sign up soon as we must register our group and secure hotel reservations by early September. If you have questions, see Mike, Michelle, or Caroline or call the church office.

*NOTE: Families with children in the 5th grade or younger should participate in the Kid’s Carnival.
