Words from the "Interim"...

What a joy to witness a church who loves and nurtures children in the many ways you do here at Westwood. Children’s Worship on May 18th is one example of the support you provide through the children’s ministry. My thanks to the leadership in each area of this ministry and the wonderful way these children led us in worship.

The annual Church Picnic at the Apex Community Park was special in every way. Thanks for preparing all the goooood food! Thanks to the committee in setting up the shelter area for us to partake of and enjoy the finest cooking to be found anywhere. This event enabled me and my family the opportunity to get to know more of you in an informal setting. The Bazemore’s enjoyed the picnic very much.

I hope you and your family will be committed to the church during these summer months. Churches everywhere experience the “summer” slump but I do not expect this to happen at Westwood. I look forward to being with you and I hope you will be present.

You have such an opportunity to reach families in close proximity of the church. I am amazed at all the housing developments within walking distance. Will you spend some time this summer cultivating families to become a part of Westwood Baptist Church? Will you do a neighborhood survey and find out who is not in church? Will you make that important contact extending an invitation for others to attend with you?

Blessings,
Dennis N. Bazemore

Colors of the Season

You may have noticed that throughout the year the color of the cloth on our communion table and various other places in the sanctuary periodically changes. This change occurs in accordance with the Church year, and since many of us may be unaware of that tradition, the following will provide information about the symbolism of the colors.

The colors express emotions and ideas that are associated with each of the seasons of the Church year. Purple or violet is the ancient royal color and therefore a symbol of the sovereignty of God. It is also associated with our repentance from sin. White and Gold symbolize the brightness of day and the light that Jesus’ coming brought to our world. Black is the traditional color of mourning in many traditions. Red is the color of blood and reminds us of Christian martyrs and of Christ's death on the Cross. Red also symbolizes fire, and therefore is the color representing the Holy Spirit. Green is the color that symbolizes new growth.

On the Church calendar, the season of Advent begins the fourth Sunday before Christmas and lasts until Christmas Eve. The color for this season is purple, reminding us to prepare of the coming of the King of Kings. Christmas begins on Christmas Eve and traditionally lasts twelve days. It is represented by the colors of red and white to celebrate Jesus’ birth. Epiphany commemorates the visitation of the Magi to the Christ Child and the color green is used. A forty day period of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. This is a time of solemn reflection and self denial commemorating Christ’s wilderness experience in preparation for Easter. The color for Lent is purple, emphasizing repentance. Holy Week or Passion Week lasts from Palm Sunday through Good Friday. Traditionally, the color black is used to symbolize Jesus’ final week leading up to the crucifixion. The season of Easter lasts for six weeks, from Resurrection Sunday through Ascension Sunday. This time grew out of a tradition inspired by the period between Passover and the feast celebrating the giving of the Torah to Moses in Jewish history. The liturgical color for this season is celebratory White and Gold. When the season ends on Pentecost Sunday, White is replaced with Red. This color reminds worshipers of fire - the symbol of the Holy Spirit found in Acts 2. The first Sunday following Pentecost celebrates the Trinity, and the color again is White or Gold. The longest season of the Church calendar begins after Trinity Sunday and lasts until Advent. This is known in various traditions as Ordinary Time, Kingdom Tide, or Trinity Season and is represented by green, the color of new growth.

At Westwood, while we do not strictly observe these liturgical traditions, we will often change the colors in our sanctuary to create interest and enhance the richness of our worship experience. These colors have symbolic meaning and remind us of the Father’s love, Jesus’ sacrifice, and the ever-present power of the Holy Spirit in the life of every Christian. We encourage you to take notice and respond in worship.

Recipes Wanted! Westwood Needs Your Help In Creating
Our “First Edition” Cookbook!

Westwood Single Adults are sponsoring a cookbook project for our Church. We will be collecting your recipes through August 15. Please click HERE for a form. Boxes will also be located there to collect your recipes.

Don't forget to include those favorite recipes of your parents, family and friends; and fill free to put their names on the form in honor or memory of that person.

We will be taking final orders for the cookbooks thru August 15. They should be printed and back in time for you to give as Christmas gifts to your family, friends and neighbors.

The money raised from this project will be given to Westwood's DROP Fund.

Matthew 5:15 – Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

Let your recipes shine for all to see, and taste.
