"Joining God in His Work" is literally the Westwood Story. Westwood was born from a vision of the Raleigh Baptist Association to plant a church in the western part of Cary in 1989. The first service, in what was then called Westwood Chapel, was conducted on Easter Sunday Morning, April 15, 1990 in a renovated building at the corner of High House and Old Apex Road. Two years later, with 49 members, a newly adopted constitution and newly elected deacons Westwood Chapel was constituted as a new church. Rev. Tom Ogburn, a native of Cary, was called as the pastor.

Twelve acres of prime property was purchased at 830 High House Road in July 1993. Rev. Ogburn resigned in 1994 to become a Cooperative Baptist Missionary to Thailand. Rev. J. Charles Allard, a former missionary to Brazil and pastor of First Baptist Church, Morehead City became pastor on January 1, 1995. In May of 1995, the church voted to become a Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Church.
On November 3, 1996, Westwood moved to its new 7,000 square foot facility on High House Road. The church experienced steady growth and was preparing to build a family life center when St. Michael's Catholic Church made an offer to purchase the church property.
